In more detail, a distinction is made between reactions that are mediated through the immune system (food allergies) and reactions that are not mediated through the immune system (food poisoning, pseudo-allergies and metabolic diseases), e.g. fish poisoning, histamine intolerance, milk sugar intolerance.

Food hypersensitivities often cause the following complaints:

  • gastrointestinal problems: stomach-ache, winds, sick feeling / vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, irritable bowel / irritable stomach, Crohn’s disease

  • skin problems: itching of the skin, skin rashes, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis

  • problems of concentration: tiredness, depression, ADHD, ADD

  • migraine / headache

  • rheumatic diseases

  • ailments of the respiratory tract: asthma, dry nose, chronic rhinitis

  • menstrual pain

  • cardiovascular complaints

  • overweight
